Make a Difference—One Animal at a Time

Animal Control is dedicated to promoting public safety, enforcing local animal laws, and ensuring the humane treatment of animals in our community. We serve as the front line for animal-related emergencies and concerns, working to keep both residents and pets safe.

What We Do:

  • Enforce animal control laws by patrolling neighborhoods, responding to citizen complaints, issuing citations, and investigating animal-related incidents both in the field and at the shelter.

  • Care for shelter animals, including feeding, cleaning, vaccinating, showing for adoption, and performing euthanasia when necessary.

  • Handle administrative tasks, such as maintaining records, processing licenses and fees, writing reports, assisting with budgeting, and responding to public inquiries.

  • Support public outreach and education, assists with community events like rabies clinics, and may lead or train volunteers and staff.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.​
     

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
     

  • Possess or obtain a valid Alaska driver's license within thirty (30) days of employment and prior to operating a City vehicle. ​
     

  • The applicant (or employee after hire) must pass a pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and other background investigations.​
     

  • The employee's schedule is based upon a 40-hour work week, and the employee must be available to work varying schedules including weekends, City holidays, religious holidays, and shift extensions. The employee will be required to perform some work on weekends and nights and respond to emergency call outs when available.
